“Moments of Happiness” Photo Contest

The theme of our third annual photo contest is “Moments of Happiness.” At first glance, it is an anachronistic title for 2020. But—we at Berkshire Magazine still believe in remaining optimistic, celebrating the power of nature, and most of all, recognizing the beauty of humanity at its best.

The events of 2020 have certainly forced us all to reflect on what matters most. Not surprisingly, themes emerged among this year’s submissions. The vast majority of photos (more than 130) featured the outdoors or children—and often, children outdoors, enjoying freedom.

This year’s winner, “Apple Picking” (featured below), was photographed by Margo Neely at Jaeschke’s Orchard in Adams. She commented, “This stealthily captured candid of my children, Alessandra, five, and Thomas, two, was a genuine moment of joy, peace, and love caught on film. In an otherwise challenging year, to see my children together in nature—happy, healthy, and full of wonder—was an absolutely magical moment.”

I had the genuine pleasure of serving as a judge alongside Olivier Mesley, Hardymon Director of the Clark Art Institute, and Stephanie Plunkett, Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Norman Rockwell Museum.

Of the winning image, Olivier shared, “I like the sharpness of the photograph, but also the contrast between the visual complexity of the apple tree, its age, and the youth with their innocence.”

Stephanie agreed: “Margo Neely’s ‘Apple Picking’ has an otherworldly quality that makes the popular autumn pastime feel extraordinary.”

I would like to personally thank all of the photographers who shared their work for our consideration, and wish to recognize them at left. At a moment in time when we are isolated and many feel polarized, these individuals had the courage to share their honest truths with us as a community.

I would also like to thank The Tap House at Shaker Mill for donating dinner for two as a prize for the winning entry. And last, but not least, I would like to share that the contest entry fees raised $400, which is being donated to the Berkshire Food Project (berkshirefoodproject.org)

Thanks again to all of our participants—and congratulations to this year’s finalists and winner!
